When Sounds Feel Too Loud
Hyperacusis is a condition where everyday sounds feel uncomfortably loud or even painful, even though they are normal volume for others. It happens when the brain becomes overly sensitive to sound, causing noises that were once tolerable to feel sharp, intrusive, or overwhelming.
It often occurs alongside tinnitus but can also appear on its own. Hyperacusis can develop gradually or suddenly and may be linked to noise exposure, stress, head injury, or other hearing-related conditions.
Although it can be distressing, the good news is that there are effective treatments and strategies that can help reduce sensitivity and improve your comfort and confidence in daily life.

Common Symptoms
- Heightened sensitivity to everyday sounds (for example, cutlery clinking, traffic, voices)
- Discomfort or pain in response to sound, often described as sharp, aching, or stabbing
- Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or distressed in noisy environments such as shops or restaurants
- Avoidance of social settings or busy places due to fear of sound exposure
Causes
Hyperacusis is related to how the brain interprets sound. In most cases, the brain applies too much “gain” to incoming sounds, a bit like turning up the volume too high. This exaggerated response can make even quiet or moderate sounds feel overwhelming.
It can be linked to:
- Sudden or long-term noise exposure
- Hearing damage or ear trauma
- Head injuries affecting the auditory system
- Neurological conditions (for example, migraines or Bell’s palsy)
- Emotional stress, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress
In some cases, no clear cause is found, but that does not mean treatment will not help.
